About the Event

Imagine creating your own beautiful photobook filled with memories from your trips and vacations, your family members, or weddings, birthdays and other events!

This workshop teaches you step-by-step all you need to know to make your very own, personalised A5, glossy 28-page photobook. By the end of the workshop you'll have produced a stunning publication using easy-to-use online software. At the end of the workshop a digital file containing your book is sent for printing, and two weeks later you'll have your photobook in hand, all included in the price of the workshop!

During this workshop you'll be introduced to the principles of book design; learn how to tell stories using photos; shown how to select the images to be included in your book; and how to combine it all in a digital file. The process is simple enough that anyone with basic computer skills can do it, no special knowledge of software is required.

Ready to participate? Great! Here is an outline of the workshop.

The workshop consists of two half-day (morning) sessions, held a week apart.

Session One - Friday 24 September, 8am - 12.00pm)

  • What will my photobook be about? How to tell a creative, compelling story with photographs.
  • What must go on each page? The basics of photobook content.
  • What will the book look like? Layout basics, cover design, how to create a mock-up of your photobook
  • How do I select photos for my book? The basics of photo composition

After the first session, each participant will receive homework to complete before the following session:

  • Select the photos for inclusion in your book.
  • Write photo captions (optional), and write a prelude/foreword.
  • Decide on the sequence of your photos, and create a mockup of your photobook.

Session Two - Saturday 2 October, 8.30am - 12.00pm

This is a practical, hands-on session where participants create their own photobook using online design software.

There is no need to manually load software on your computer - all is done online using a web browser such as Google Chrome or Windows Explorer, and an Internet connection will be provided for that purpose.

Once you have produced your photobook using the software, the resulting file will be sent electronically for printing. The printing process takes approximately two weeks. You'll be alerted as soon as your photobook is ready for collection at Photo House in Kenton-on-Sea.

The end result will be an attractive A5 size, hard cover, 28 page glossy full-colour (or black and white!) photobook.

Best of all, you can use the skills you learn to create more photobooks by yourself after the workshop!

What to bring to the workshop

Participants are required to bring their own laptops to the workshop to work on. Both Macbook and Windows computers are suitable. The specifications of the computer aren't important, as long as it's a reasonably recent model that has a wi-fi to access the Internet with.

Participants are encouraged to bring existing photos they want to publish in their photobooks to the workshop.
